Typically, the receiver (rx) is the device that is on a quadcopter that receives control signals on the ground and makes them available for the flight controller.  Receivers come in many different varieties, outputting different signals depending on their configuration.  Some popular receivers are the FRsky D4r-II, and the Frsky X4R-SB.  Receivers can output PWM, PPM, and SBUS signals which are different ways of translating information from the transmitter (controller on the ground) to the flight controller.  There is another type of receiver used that picks up video signals on the ground, see Video receiver.
