The BPX-3

At first impression, the Quadgaurd looks like an ordinary backpack, but once you start to see it up close, you will notice that this isn’t your average backpack.  This bag is made for racing drones pilots that are flying the popular 5” class racing drones  and toting drones such as the QQ190.

Traditionally there have been challenges for drone racers, because we have so much gear that we have to haul with us, that it can prove to be a big challenge getting everything out to the field without bringing a large assortment of tools, parts, quads, computers, antennas, controllers and more spread across many different bags and containers.

I can even remember the days when pilots would bring a giant tool box to the field with them as well- which is ridiculous but almost necessary.

Even traditional backpacks aren’t a good option for the drone racer.  The traditional backpack loads from bottom to top- so finding the gear you need quickly without having to dump the whole thing out can be a big issue.  Also, Radios and drones are not normal shapes, which lends for a lot of wasted space.  I’ve traveled extensively with mini quads and put up with my normal backpack for years, but now I have been spoiled.

Enter the BPX-3 from Lowepro.  LowePro has been making gear for photography for years, and i talked with the designer of the bag and he said that one of the things that he didn’t like about drones was the fact that you have to bring all of your gear out to the field in a haphazard, unorganized fashion.  That inspired the design of the BPX-3.

The BPX3 solves the issue by compartmentalizing the pack similar to how very high-end camera bags work.  The bag features a rear entry system, which means that to access your gear, you actually have to take the bag off and unzip it to reveal all of your precious drone racing gear.  This is nice because it keeps people from getting into the bag while you are wearing it, and also makes it so that your gear stays nice and protected.

Once open, the internals of the bag are revealed.. showing all of the compartments and storage within.

The new addition to the BPX-3 is the laptop sleeve.  LowePro was quick to tell us that they have really listened to pilot feedback when designing the BPX-3 which follows the QQ philosophy of giving the pilots what they want.  In this model, The laptop sleeve is built into the back of the bag , and this is a fantastic feature that has really been lacking in previous LowePro models.    It fit my 15” MacBook pro with ease.

There are elastic tool holders on the back that can be used to hold tools, cables, antennas, or anything else that you can think of.

I am really a fan of the way that they decided to fit everything in the BPx-3.  The a 5” quad such as the QQ190 fit’s nicely on LowPro’s “quad storage” platform with props installed.  The Storage platform holds the drone securely via an elastic strap.    The Quadstorage platform is removable (via velcro attachment points) and is lined with the company’s “rugged 600D exterior material” The 600D has been strategically placed to protect the bag where the quad might rub into it, such as on the laptop sleeve and on the Platform itself.

There are also 4 pockets that you can use for storage of batteries, or anything else that you can think of under the quad platform.  These pockets are 2”x4”x7” deep, but the dividers are removable so that you can rearrange this section to fit your needs.  We were able to fit 10 Tattu 1300mah batteries in the compartments, (still in box) and probably more if we used batteries out of their boxes.

Another sweet feature of the bag is the removable toolbar that fits underneath the battery compartments- This toolBag has an internal divider for you to organize your tools, We found this to be a nice bonus, because you only need one tool bag for the shop and the field-  We have started keeping all of our most-used tools in the tool bag that comes with the Lowepro BPX-3.  This way when we are ready to go to the field we just grab our tool bag and go.  It has really helped make our entire operation more portable.  Now it is a no-brainer when it’s time to go fly, we just grab our BP-X3 and go.

Underneath the Quad platform, there is the radio holder.  This is something that for me, is one of the nicest features of this bag,  I have never really found a good way to carry a radio outside of a separate case, and the BP-X3 solves this issue with a nice and removable pad that keeps the pressure off of your gimbals and holds your radio tight.  WE tested it with a TBS Tango, Frsky Taranis, Spektrum Dx-5 and At-9 radio, and they all fit well.

There is also an additional pocket under the quad platform for holding a monitor, or anything else that you can think of.   Additionally, there is a nice band of elastic in this pocket which is handy for storing more equipment.

After flying, storage is a breeze, and with everything compartmentalized, knowing if you have all of your gear is very easy when you look at the bag after it is packed.

One thing we were worried about is how comfortable wearing the bag is when it is fully loaded.-

he bag is actually surprisingly comfortable fully loaded.  We weighed our bag with all gear at 16lbs. We found after multiple tests that the bag stays comfortable in part because of the countered shoulder straps, adjustable sternum strap and plush mesh back panel.  The padding on the back panel alone is about 1” thick and you can really feel the quality here.

The stitching that holds the bag together is also very high quality, which helps keep this bag standing the test of time when going on long treks with your FPV gear.

the bag also features high quality zippers, with nice nylon pull tabs.  The quality is really something that you can feel when zipping and unzipping the bag.

The outside of the bag has similar features to the earlier models of the LowePro BP-X3 and features exterior attachment loops for connecting even more quads, and side pockets for carrying a tripod, and waterbottle. and more.

Finishing the BPX-3 off is a Formshell TM armored panel and is a great place for putting fragile gear such as sunglasses, phones, props and other delicate electronics.

Finally- as if there weren’t enough great features for quad pilots. The bag features a built-in All weather “AW Cover” which is deployable when the weather makes a turn for the worse.

We tested it with a hose and were very happy to find that the cover kept our gear dry even when facing lots and lots of water (probably much more than you would find in your typical rainstorm).

Our conclusion?

The LowePro BPX-3 is made by quad racing enthusiasts for quad racing enthusiasts.  It has really revolutionized the way that we stay organized at QQ and how we carry our gear.  Now we have everything in one place, ready to fly at a moments notice.  It’s refreshing to have a bag that is custom tailored for the gear that we use on a daily basis and it really makes organizing and transporting racing drones such as the QQ190 fast and easy.
